This was the team’s first MAJOR work day. While the outstanding paint team continued on the dining room, the Skip-led team began demolition work in the showers. Vicki’s team (Vicki, Sadie, and Nick) were worried about painting the high walls because there was only one ladder but, alas, the children came in with bamboo stalks which allowed the team to complete the walls. The dining room looks GREAT!
Then the team moved on to creating chalkboards in the Library, Church, and a classroom. The black chalkboard paint they used was very thick, needed thinning, and looked and smelled like tar. Vickie quipped, “This paint can be used on roofs and driveways!” The paint in NOT removable and when you see Vicki, she can prove that she painted the chalkboards since her hands are black from the tar-paint!
The next morning, Isaac suggested that the team remove the bug they painted over on the chalkboard wall. It was so funny as the bug was spralled-out all limbs painted over. Another bug got revenge the next day by stinging Vicki when she kneeled down to work!
Team Skip (Skip, Ed, and Ben), began demolition of the girls showers. All six showers in the girls—and all six showers in the boys shower—had to be demolished and rebuilt. Early in the morning, we realized that we still needed some parts—yikes! Would we have to go back to Jaquingiro? Yes, but only Isaac would go this day.
Skip had a large group of children working with him—following him—and working on the pipes. Ben was tasked with removing old support brackets, and installing new ones. Ed was given the task of making large holes in the walls for cross-support brackets. Unfortunately, Ed made the holes on the inside but "blew-out" the outside walls of the showers..."no worries" as Papa John fixed the holes! By the time Skip had the faucets completed, Ben was almost done with his brackets, too.
Then the “sickness” hit! Ben was hit with intestinal messiness. He was a trooper. He took his Cipro and began to get a lot of rest—but he would need another day and a-half before he was fully restored to the team. Then it was Skip, followed by Ed, followed by Sadie and Vicki. Nick is the only one who remains standing strong!! As I write this, we are all still dealing with “something” instestinally, but we’re getting better. We’ve NOT slowed down, but we do get to the bathroom in record time! Praise to Cipro and Immodium!
The shower project would not be completed in one day—the girl’s shower was done, but time did not allow us to get the boy’s done, too. We had to remind ourselves that dawn arrives at 6am everyday, and dusk arrives at 6pm each day—year round.
All-in-all both team’s had a great—hard—day and were ready for Family Time. On this evening, we sang songs with the children, re-enacted the story of David and Goliath, and did a game of Duck-Duck-Goose. By the way, in our re-enactment, Skip was Saul, Vicki and Sadie were the Philistines, Nick was David, and Ben was Goliath. I was the narrator.
That evening at devotions, we thanked God for all His blessings and the opportunity to serve Him in Africa—and we lifted-up the team—Ben in particular for healing!
AMEN!
